What does stropping paste do?

Stropping paste is used during stropping to refine and fine-tune the edge of straight razors. When applied to leather or canvas, the paste adds a mild abrasive that helps smooth out microscopic irregularities in the edge.

Compared to a whetstone, stropping paste is considerably milder and is mainly used for maintenance between full sharpenings. Regular stropping with paste can extend the time between major honing sessions and contribute to a smoother, more comfortable shave.

The difference between diamond paste and other polishing pastes

Diamond paste is a type of polishing compound where the abrasive consists of industrial diamond. This provides highly efficient and even abrasion with precise grit size, making diamond paste popular for fine adjustment and polishing of edges.

Other polishing pastes may instead contain abrasives such as silicon carbide (carborundum) or chromium oxide. These are often used for coarser material removal or as a first step before finer polishing. The choice between diamond paste and other compounds depends on how dull the edge is and the finish you want to achieve.
