Preshave
The best way to get a good shave is to prepare your skin well. Pre-shave oil softens the skin and beard before shaving and applies to wet skin. For best results, let the oil work for a minute before you lather on. Take a few drops of oil and massage them into your beard.
If you shave with an electric razor, there is pre-shave for electric shaving. It prevents redness and irritation, and lifts the hairs so you get a smooth shave.
