The best way to use shaving cream

With the right technique and the correct amount of water, you can build a creamy lather that improves glide for the razor and results in a smoother and safer shave.

1. Rinse your face with warm water to soften skin and beard before shaving.

2. Place the shaving brush in warm, not hot, water for a few seconds. Shake out excess water so it is damp but not dripping.

3. Use a small amount of shaving cream, about the size of a thumbnail. Load the brush directly in the cream or place the cream in a shaving bowl.

4. Build lather using circular motions and add a few drops of water at a time until it becomes creamy and elastic.

5. Work the lather into the face so the brush lifts the beard and massages the skin before shaving.

6. Beginners may find bowl lathering gives better control before applying to the face.
